For decades, “in keeping with the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and in recognition of the restoration of health as a sign of the presence of God’s kingdom,” The United Methodist Church has officially seen health care as a human right, and has advocated for “public financing mechanisms…that assure the greatest possible access of each person to…health services.” (Methodist Book of Resolutions 1984, 2008)
The Affordable Care Act signed into law in March of 2012, and since validated by the Supreme Court, brings this goal closer. It’s provisions recognize that it’s in everyone’s interest (and part of everyone’s responsibility) that comprehensive health insurance is available to all, especially the most vulnerable, including those people with pre-existing medical conditions, and to women on an equal basis with men.

On this Sunday we get to officially celebrate the appointment of Pastor Steven Peiffer as our spiritual leader. Pastor Steve comes to us from the Methodist Church in Goshen, NY, where he served for 5 years. Today we have the opportunity to embrace a rejuvenation of our hearts, our minds, our spiritual souls, and a renewed commitment to the life of First United Methodist Church.
